Shell Model Codes for Linux and Unix Users !

News: Version 4 Release 2 compiles and runs on OpenSuSe Linux 10.3-64 bit with version 9.0 of the Intel Compiler, with minor operating system changes, 31 March 2008.

Although I have ported the code Nushell to the Sun Sparc platform and most of the codes will compile and run on Linux systems using the Intel Fortran Compiler 9.0 for Linux without any modifications, transporting such a large code base is difficult. I do not have the time or the hardware to do this job properly. However there is a much simpler alternative for other Operating Systems running on X86 or compatible hardware.

Wine

In the past Wine, a Windows Emulator for Linux and Unix, has provided basic functionality for running precompiled Windows executables on Linux and Unix platforms and is widely distributed with these operating systems. However I have discovered that the latest release as of 11 Jan 2008 is sufficiently sophisticated and efficient to run NuShellX and by generalisation Nushell without change using the precompiled Windows executables available here. (You will need an intermediate Windows PC to extract the files.)

Wine latest release (11 Jan 2008)

The latest release of Wine is free to download from the Wine HQ web site or Sourceforge. I have not done extensive tests but compared to the release that came with my Linux (SuSe 10.0) the most recent release of Wine is significantly improved. No virtual memory problems and the performance cost is only of the order 10-15% on the cases I have tried. So I recommend this to you as an easy solution for running NuShellX and Nushell on other platforms with minimal effort. (Note I have not tested all of Nushell yet.)
